How to Deal with Imposter Syndrome
Everyone sometimes feels like a fraud, but people with Imposter Syndrome feel this way all the time. You’re not the only one. It is thought that about 70% of people will have to deal with this at some point in their lives. Even though the phenomenon is common, not much is known about it.
What Indications Reveal Imposter Syndrome?
While there is no formal diagnosis, below is a list of frequent symptoms:
- Self-doubt is a constant part of everything you’ve done, are doing, and will do.
- Regardless of external accomplishment, you have a continual worry of being “found out” or exposed as a fraud.
- When you gain success, you credit it to chance or call it a fluke. Instead of satisfaction and pride, you may experience relief or even distress.
- You seek affirmation from authority figures, such as a supervisor or a family member, and give them the ability to determine whether or not you are successful.
Imposter syndrome is most likely caused by a combination of variables, including personality qualities (such as perfectionism) and family history.
One theory says that it starts in homes where getting things done is more important than anything else. Another research paper says that it starts when families don’t have enough support and fight a lot.
