Where Would You Be If You Just Begin?
The most challenging aspect of establishing a new habit, such as exercising, learning ballet, or writing daily, is getting started. To begin doing something are always the most challenging.
The behavior that we all really need to adopt is the habit of initiating!
Perhaps this is the year you’re motivated to achieve that beach body, but you’re having difficulty getting to the gym on a consistent basis. Why are you unable to go for a jog or take up your instrument on a daily basis?
You may already feel at ease when seated on the couch. It may be inconvenient to go for a run in the rain. Perhaps you’ll need to remove your guitar from its case, tune it, and then create a space to sit and play.
When you think about it, both of those explanations represent distinct perspectives on the same subject.
The solution is to simplify the process of getting started:
-
Choose an activity that appeals to you.
Attempt to pick an activity that meets your requirements while also being enjoyable. If you enjoy basketball but despise jogging, try basketball as a way to improve your fitness level.
- If you enjoy it, you’re more inclined to begin.
-
Make an attempt to think of an activity that you can undertake at home.
If you have to get in the car before you can begin the activity, it will be more difficult to begin. This is one of the most significant impediments to action.
-
Begin simply.
If you’re new to yoga, start with a beginner’s class. The advanced class is almost certainly a typographical error. Another option is to set a time restriction. This week, spend ten minutes each day practicing the guitar. You may gradually increase time.
- It’s simpler to begin when you know it will take only a few minutes.
-
Concentrate exclusively on the initial step
Whether you’re lacing up your running shoes or typing a single line into your word processor. Take the first step before you can convince yourself otherwise.
- Once you’ve taken the initial step, momentum may carry you the rest of the way.
-
Plan beforehand to avoid the necessity for preparation
If you want to exercise after supper, lay out all of your running gear in the morning. Prepare your guitar by tuning it, mounting it on a stand, and getting it ready to travel. When the time comes, the lower the barrier to entry, the easier it will be to get started.
- What can you do to make the process as simple as possible?
-
Include another individual.
If you’ve made arrangements with another individual, you’re far less likely to cancel. The majority of us find it unpleasant to let another person down. This is especially advantageous if the activity requires you to go to another area. It can significantly assist you in getting out the door.
Thus, the idea is to make beginning as simple as possible. Remind yourself that the most important thing is to get started. You’ll typically discover that it’s simple to continue once you’ve begun. Utilize the techniques above and see if you can complete 30 days.
Begin small, but begin!
